The Channel Country Way
The Channel Country Way
The newly named Channel Country Way completes the link between Outback Queensland’s South West and Central West regions. This fully sealed drive route connects Quilpie, Barcoo and Longreach Shires, interweaving the stories of our prehistoric past with First Nations and early pastoralists.
Day 1: Quilpie & Toogunna Plains Farmstay
On arrival in Quilpie, make your first stop the Visitor Information Centre, Museum and Gallery. Quilpie is home to the exquisite boulder opal. While in town you can try your luck in the free opal fossicking area and see the stunning Opal Altar at St Finbarr’s Church. Quench your thirst and enjoy a meal at the Quilpie Brick Hotel. Drive about 7.4km from Quilpie to explore Baldy Top, a magnificent boulder formation, millions of years old. Travel west along State Route 14 then Cooper Development Road to the Toogunna Plains Farmstay turnoff (approximately 45 minutes drive from Quilpie). Check in to your deluxe ensuite hut for the next two nights. Late afternoon, join our optional Sandhills at Sunset Tour with drinks and canapés – the perfect way to celebrate the sunset!
Day 2: Toogunna Plains Farmstay & Dinosaurs
Following a relaxed breakfast, join us on a 3 hour morning station tour (optional) for a candid insight into our family grazing business and unique outback environment. Free time to explore one of our self-guided walks ranging from 750 metres to 5.2km using our exclusive walking trail app. Consider an afternoon visit to the Eromanga Natural History Museum, to meet Australia’s largest dinosaur from some 95-million years ago. On their one hour Dinosaur Giants Tour watch expert guides demonstrate fossil preparation, see the incredible megafauna fossils, and witness these ancient giants come to life in a state-of-the-art multi-media presentation. Return to Toogunna Plains Farmstay to enjoy a self-cook BBQ pack and campfire stargazing.
Day 3: Toogunna Plains Farmstay to Windorah
Wake to another relaxed morning at Toogunna Plains Farmstay and perhaps fit in a short walk before check-out. Drive north to Windorah in the Barcoo Shire via Kybra Waterhole, a great spot for a picnic morning tea and to spot local birdlife. In the 1860s, pioneer John Costello and his family settled here on the property ‘Kyabra’. Plan to arrive in Windorah for lunch at the Western Star Hotel then a wander through the Whitula Gate Museum – an original slab hut, circa 1906 built on the banks of the Whitula Creek which has been relocated to the grounds of the Visitor Information Centre. Windorah is the Aboriginal word meaning “Big Fish” and is located 35km south of where the Thomson and Barcoo Rivers join to form the multi-channelled Cooper’s Creek. Overnight Windorah
Day 4: Windorah to Longreach
Departing Windorah, drive north to Longreach along the Channel Country Way. Enroute visit the unique Native Well just outside Jundah, used for centuries as a valuable water source by Aboriginal people. Jundah is the closest town to Welford National Park and is an ideal base if you would prefer day visits. Then capture 360 degree Channel Country views from the picturesque Swanvale Lookout which straddles the Johnston Range midway between Jundah and Stonehenge. About two kilometres from the Stonehenge turnoff en route to Longreach, you can sign the visitor’s book – Stonehenge style. This involves writing your town name with stones – a quirky tradition started years ago by the then mailman. Continue your drive to Longreach and spend a few days experiencing top attractions including Qantas Founders Museum, Australian Stockman’s Hall of Fame and the Drover’s Sunset Cruise.
